Satan and Death with Sin Intervening, John Henry Fuseli. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s Shadows-y but with a bit more grit, like if Hank Marvin turned his amp up and lost his plectrum. That riff creates tension and drama worthy of the films that inspired it. Once Upon A Time In The West ( Communiqué, 1979) We’ll have to take his word for it, but it is a very Dylan-esque song, and Dylan and Knopfler have worked together on occasion. It feels like the songwriter is laying the foundation for his thoughtful, narrative solo work.Īccording to folk (rock) lore, Bob Dylan called the rhyme “ Confidential information, it’s in a diary / This is my investigation, it’s not a public inquiry” one of the best of all time. There’s also a generous helping of synth to remind us we’re in 1982. It’s less a song and more a radio play, Knopfler’s raspy, spoken vocal dovetailing with a classical guitar that moves between mournful and tense as the narrator’s mind wanders. This song is the best of the band as storytellers. Private Investigations ( Love Over Gold, 1982) The first solo sounds like classic, Sultans Knopfler with its characterful bends and clean highs, but by the end of the guitar snarls and bites like on Money For Nothing. Knopfler thought up the song from the bus while touring America. It’s a 70-mile stretch of highway in Detroit named after the wires that run down each side, some of the first telegraph wires in the world. Telegraph Road is the 14-minute centre piece of the album and features enough tones and licks from Knopfler to fill a song twice its length. They are choosing love over gold, if you will. Its full of marathon songs that meander, and you feel the band is creating the music they want to make, rather than aiming for commercial success. There’s something fantastic about the scale of Dire Straits’ fourth studio album Love Over Gold. Despite making his name with the band in Deptford, the guitarist’s work has always been filled with nostalgia for his native North East. The waterline in question was the bank of the Tyne where a teenaged Knopfler walked with his then girlfriend. There are lovely flourishes and quick fingerpicking throughout, but the intro is the undoubted highlight. In truth, the song dies away here as the verse starts and it falls into a pleasant but forgettable ballad. ![]() It’s the subtlety that does it, a few notes here, a hint of delay over the cymbals and then we’re away. Knopfler talked so much better with his Strat than he ever did with his mouth. The first riff here though, breaking through after 20 seconds of atmospheric fog, is guitar music at its most dramatic and its most expressive. This list is not short of great Strat tones and great intros. The first track on the first Dire Straits album. There’s not an awful lot going on compared to other songs on this list, but it is quite lovely.ĭown To The Waterline ( Dire Straits, 1978) This is Knopfler fingerpicking in a more conventional way, plucking a hopeful tune from his trusty National in open G and singing a romantic if cheesy vocal over the top. Romeo And Juliet ( Making Movies, 1980)Īlternative tunings are a pain, but when done well they can be spectacular. They showed him Money For Nothing, and he was such a fan they persuaded him to feature on it. The band were recording in Montserrat when the Police frontman, enjoying a windsurfing holiday, came to visit. Sting’s iconic opening vocal on the song was included largely by accident. Mark Knopfler singing “hoover mover” with such feeling is one of the best ad libs of all time. The throaty, wah’d Les Paul tones crunch through after those ethereal opening vocals from Sting, making this the Dire Straits song with the most attitude. TikTok has recently claimed this track as the ultimate score, something that improves any video clip. ![]() ![]() ![]() An RGB histogram produces three independent histograms and then adds them together, irrespective of whether or not each color came from the same pixel. Luminance refers to the absolute amount of light emitted by an object per unit area, whereas luminosity refers to the perceived brightness of that object by a human observer.Īn important difference to take away from the above calculation is that while luminance histograms keep track of the location of each color pixel, RGB histograms discard this information. *Technical Note: Strictly speaking, these should really be called "luminosity histograms." Unfortunately, the terms "luminance" and "luminosity" are often used interchangeably, including by Photoshop, even though each describes a different aspect of light intensity. Once all pixels have been converted into luminosity, a luminance histogram is produced by counting how many pixels are at each brightness - identical to how a histogram is produced for a single color. Move your mouse over "convert to luminosity" under the example image above to see what this calculation looks like when performed for each pixel. ![]() This weighting assumes that green represents 59% of the perceived luminosity, while the red and blue channels account for just 30% and 11%, respectively. How is a luminance histogram produced? First, each pixel is converted so that it represents a luminosity based on a weighted average of the three colors at that pixel. ![]() ![]() ![]() The same technique is used with the weeds that hang on the creature’s back those are simple sheets of flat polygons with a cutout texture applied. You can also see that the spiky hair on the edges of the legs are actually flat polygons which will receive a texture to give the impression of many little strands bunched together. But the important thing is to make certain that the overall silhouette does not show large straight edges so that the illusion of it being higher-resolution is not broken. The impression of the model being highly detailed is going to be preserved thanks to the use of a normal-map texture (not shown here). The quality of deformations depends on it. Since the model is obviously going to be animated I need to make sure that the topology allows for bending the limbs in a practical way. The low-res mesh envelops the high-resolution mesh so that the volumes are maintained. There, I create a lower-resolution of the model, which is destined to be used in-game. ![]() ![]() Now that the model is almost finished in Zbrush, I export the high-resolution mesh back into Maya. So the next phase will aim at getting a model that can eventually be animated and used in-game. The model is not painted yet and it is so dense (several millions of faces) that it would be absolutely impossible to use it in a real-time game engine. Otherwise all this work would pretty much have to be redone. Of course at this stage I need to be fairly certain the model is not going to change drastically in terms of appearance. It is capable of dealing with huge amounts of polygons and allows the user to imprint the minutest details directly on the model’s surface. To do this, I subdivide the model a few times so that there is enough resolution to accommodate those detail the faces become so small that you can’t see the individual polygons anymore.Īgain I use Zbrush which is an excellent sculpting tool (despite its somewhat unintuitive interface). Once I’m fairly happy with the overall proportions, the next step is to start adding tiny scratches and bumps to the surface in order to imbue a more organic aspect to the creature. Note that at this stage I already know I’ll have to open the arms of the creature so I can get a better look while sculpting. But starting with the arms folded ensured that the crab would eventually be able to get into that pose later on. Again, not caring too much about details yet just roughing in the main volumes. Then I start to work on the body parts in Zbrush (bottom picture), simply refining the broad shapes. It’s best to check that everything looks as expected now (in terms of overall morphology), as it will become more difficult to change things further down the line. As you can see, it’s all very blocky and I do not worry about details at this stage. It all starts with a simple cube (within Maya), followed by other cubes to roughly represent all the body parts and get a feel for the overall volume of the limbs. ![]() Before starting to work on the model, I always surround myself with visual references (photographs, paintings) and make mental notes of aspects I will emphasize in order to end up with a model that’ll be interesting enough. As a side note, I’ll have to spread that presentation over several updates, as Indiegogo only allows for one picture per update. For those of you interested in the more technical aspects of the game’s development I thought I would present the method I used to create the crab model. ![]() ![]() ST announced the STM32 F030-series chips and availability in a TSSOP20 package ST announced STM32 Embedded Coder support for MATLAB and Simulink ST announced full Java support for STM32 F2 and F4-series chips ST announced full-production of STM32 F3-series chips and STM32F3DISCOVERY board ST announced the STM32 F3-series chips based on the ARM Cortex-M4F core ST announced the STM32 F0-series chips based on the ARM Cortex-M0 core ST announced the STM32 F4-series chips based on the ARM Cortex-M4F core and STM32F4DISCOVERY board ST announced the expansion of their STM32 L1-series chips with flash densities of 256 KB and 384 KB ST announced the STM32 F2-series chips based on the ARM Cortex-M3 core, and future development ST announced new ARM chips would be built using the 90 nm process ST announced the low-cost "STM32-PerformanceStick" development kit in partner with Hitex ST announced the STM32 F1-series based on the ARM Cortex-M3 STMicroelectronics licensed the ARM Cortex-M3 core The following is the history of how the STM32 family has evolved. ![]() It follows their earlier STR9 family based on the ARM9E core, and STR7 family based on the ARM7TDMI core. A clash of fact versus opinion happened on September 9, 2010, during President Obama’s nationally televised speech to a joint session of Congress outlining his health care reform plan. In American politics, the issue of health care reform is heavily laden with both opinions and facts, and it is extremely difficult to sort some of them out. Part of critical listening is learning to separate opinions from facts, and this works two ways: critical listeners are aware of whether a speaker is delivering a factual message or a message based on opinion, and they are also aware of the interplay between their own opinions and facts as they listen to messages. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan is credited with saying, “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts” (Wikiquote). ![]() Recognizing the Difference between Facts and Opinions ![]() For example, a city treasurer giving a budget presentation might use very large words and technical jargon, which make it difficult for listeners to understand the proposed budget and ask probing questions. Unfortunately, some speakers may make their messages intentionally complex to avoid critical scrutiny. Critical listening can be particularly difficult when the message is complex. Problems occur when messages are repeated to others who have not yet developed the skills to discern the difference between a valid message and a mistaken one. Some people never learn this skill instead, they take every message at face value even when those messages are in conflict with their knowledge. Critical listening can be learned with practice but is not necessarily easy to do. Part of being a good listener is to learn when to use caution in evaluating the messages we hear.Ĭritical listening in this context means using careful, systematic thinking and reasoning to see whether a message makes sense in light of factual evidence. Nor is it always clear which messages are intended to help the listener and which ones are merely self-serving for the speaker. You know it’s not all the same, but it isn’t always clear how to separate the truth from the messages that are misleading or even blatantly false. You receive messages conveying academic information, institutional rules, instructions, and warnings you also receive messages through political discourse, advertisements, gossip, jokes, song lyrics, text messages, invitations, web links, and all other manner of communication.
